One-Eyed Cat a Newberry award winning novel

Ned receives a rifle from his uncle for his birthday. His father refuses to allow Ned to use it and his mother is too sick to care. Ned can't resist sneaking it out of the attic and trying it just once. Ned takes a shot and turns to see a face in the attic window. Who has seen hime? Ned's guilt and fear are multiplied when he sees a one-eyed cat. Was this the shadow Ned shot? Ned has to work through his pain and guilt to make things better.

This book teaches students why rules and laws exist. Ned's dad wanted to keep him safe. This would go great with a unit on communities and rules and laws.

This book made me feel mixed emotions. At first I was very angry with Ned for harming the poor cat, then I sympathezed with his pain.
